When I discovered that we could remix our Compare and Contrast essays, I immediately knew that I wanted to make a spoof of “The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross” using the advertisements from my essay. I spent way more time on this remix than the first one since it involved more work. Writing the script for the video was super easy because all I had to think about were what colors each of the advertisements included and how to incorporate each part of my essay to the events/sayings that happen on Ross’s show.
Since I am amazing at filmmaking and comedy, I cranked out the entire script in one class period. I also had all of the props I needed ready to go, so I was able to shoot the entire movie in one afternoon. Filming took a little bit longer than expected, especially since it took around 10 takes for me to say the very first lines. I had to recite an entire block of dialogue in one take and sound enthusiastic at the same time. The next day, I realized that I accidentally forgot to film the hardest scene in the entire movie: the intro. This was because the intro of “The Joy of Painting” involves Ross standing in front of a green screen and painting the entire picture that the episode focuses on using editing magic. While it was totally possible, I was not sure how to make it look like I was painting the background on Final Cut Pro. Eventually, I figured out that I could just trim the footage and then put in the green screen effect during post-production. While it took longer than expected, I think that this remix is a true masterpiece.
So why did I choose this for my remix? I figured that by using humor and spoofing something most people know, I could get my points across without sounding boring. It also works nicely because Bob Ross’s show is about painting and we had to compare and contrast images. This made it easy to have the Bob Ross character (Mob Goss) supposedly paint the advertisements from my paper. The video also has a nice balance between spoof and argument. Goss would go from explaining the painting he just made in an argumentative fashion to beating the devil out of his paintbrush in an intense, comical manner. Even the argumentative parts had some elements of humor, such as the Katy Perry joke in the second act. If I had not made this video funny, I do not think that the content in the video would be very interesting, nor would I be able to effectively get my points across.
